STEP BY STEP PLANNING by Priscilla and Patricia Gruber

Just as we attorneys felt when we were faced with picking the ‘right white’ paint for our office walls (do you know how many whites there are??), some people feel understandably overwhelmed by the many legal and practical options they have to choose from when planning for their family’s futures.

At our office, we help our clients break down planning what could happen both before and after their deaths.  Some call it estate planning or just think of it as two of its most common options, Wills and Trusts.  But we think it would be better to call it ‘future life and generation planning.’

After all, the questions are big ones, like, “How will your resources be available to care for you and your dearest family members while you are alive?  How will the bills get paid?  What happens (and how) to everything remaining after your death?” Those sure deal with life and generations, not just Wills and Trusts.

Most people do not have immediate answers to all these questions, but they do have a strong sense of what they think should happen.  Our jobs as estate planning attorneys is to help our clients translate these preferences into solid reasons for deciding which legal options to use to make it so.

The first step is figuring what you have – both resources and responsibilities - and identifying what you would want to happen.
